Get Rid of Depression

Lesbian Couple 2006

According to the New York Times, the rate of depression among women is higher than it is among men. A recent study showed the reason for depression includes "physical and sexual abuse, poverty, bias that persisted in forms like lower wages than those paid to men, unhappy marriages, hormonal changes over the menstrual cycle and childbirth, and a tendency to focus on depressed feelings rather than taking steps to master them."

However, there are ways to relieve depression and to keep control of your life.

FOOD

The food we eat plays a huge role in how our body feels. Look at your diet. If it consists mainly of fast foods or processed foods, with little to no fruits and vegetables, you're not doing your body any favors. Choose plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy products and foods high in fiber. Follow the Food Guide Pyramid.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE

Are you living your life doing what you love? If not, it's time to start. Take up a hobby that you've always wanted to do. Go back to school to study for a new career or take a class to learn a subject you've always wanted to learn. This is especially important if you're working in a job you hate. Make changes to leave the job so that you can work in a job you love.

EXAMINE YOUR APPEARANCE

Have you let yourself go? Often when people make an effort to improve their appearance their mood improves as well. Examine the way you look. Are you wearing crappy clothes everyday? What can you do to change that. Have you stopped exercising, and as a result, have the pounds set in? Join a health club or buy a workout tape and exercise at home.

MOTIVATE YOURSELF

Perhaps you need the help of someone else to get you back on track? Motivational tapes and books are great ways to do it. Listening or reading to the words of people like Zig Ziglar or Anthony Robbins can really get you motivated.

COUNSELING AND SUPPORT

There's nothing wrong with getting help for your depression, and in fact, if your depression is severe, it's highly recommended to do so. Look for a mental health professional by following the tips at Help Guide.

  1. Love this little article. Food is chemistry and our bodies are one big chemistry lab. What we eat is so important to health and well being. Thanks for sharing this info with all us gay girls.
